Properties of Nections required by the (top-down) model
These properties of the model amount to predictions from the modeling process about properties that need to be found in the cortex if the model is valid. If they are not found, the model must be rejected or revised. (See Pathways, chapter 17.)
- Varying degrees of activation
- Varying degrees of strength of connections
- Strengthening of connections as a learning process
- Local and distant excitatory connections
- Inhibitory connections
- (i) Local only
- (ii) Two kinds: project either to line or to node
- Wait elements (needed for the ordered and)
- Bidirectional connections (feed-forward and feed-backward)
- Preponderance of latent connections
Taken as 'predictions' of what neural structures and types of connections have to be present according to the cortical column hypothesis, all are confirmed.
Note:
Basket Cells: Inhibit neighbors (lateral inhibition).
Chandelier Cells: Axo-axonic inhibition within column.
