A word from the President

We have many plans for the organization that we hope to realize this year. We especially want to change the perception that HACER is only for Spanish-speaking Hispanics. The club's purpose is to provide support and understanding of Hispanic issues and culture as well as to serve as a medium of communication between its members and the greater Rice community. Although we are seen as a support group for Hispanics, which we do provide, the organization is also on campus to educate, whether through service to or learning about the Hispanic culture. During the summer we mail out our annual newsletter, El Tecolote. The newsletter really focuses and branches out to the incoming students to let them know what we do but it also serves as an educational tool to present what HACER is actively participating in. This organization is a simple solution to immerse oneself in a culture and go beyond books and lectures. Meet those people who were born in countries like Peru, Colombia, Nicaragua, or Mexico. Learn from first generation immigrants what life is like in their country. In addition, we are a link to resources off-campus such as the Hispanic consulates, the Institute of Hispanic Culture, and respected Hispanic figures and professionals. All of whom can share their experiences and provide networking opportunities. Traditionally the largest event is the December Posada Holiday Festival. This year we are also planning a spring event, the Latin World Festival, which will showcase Hispanic countries through performances, food, and informational booths.
