Hispanic Heritage Month begins September 15th. It ends October 15th. We will be having a study
break on September 16th probably in Sammy's, and we will have a variety of
tables representing different countries. Each officer is in charge of two
countries, and we need your help to research different food items and drinks
from each country! It will be a lot of fun, so if you're interested,
contact Noemi at noemid@rice.edu

If you're interested in the Summerbridge tutoring program, which was
named by the Princeton Review as the 2nd best internship in America, contact
Lucia, our community service coordinator, at lclapaz@rice.edu . The group
works with 6th-8th grade minority students who show academic potential.
Transportation in the form of car pooling will be available.
|
 |
Another community service opportunity is at the Community Families
Center, where you will be able to work 20-30 hours a week with 7-12 year
olds as either a homework tutor or a youth mentor. It is a year round
position, Mon-Fri, and you will need to provide your own transportation.
There are also volunteer positions available, so if this sounds like
something you would like to get involved with, contact Lucia: lclapaz@rice.edu .

Get Ready for POSADA!
Posada is HACER's annual cultural event which includes a procession, lots
of food, and of course...dancing! We will need dancers and choreographers,
so if you're interested, please attend the Choreographers study break on
September 14th at Kelley Lounge. Even if you don't have any experience, we
would still really appreciate any suggestions or ideas you might have. If
you think you have an idea for how we could improve Posada...or if there's
just something you would like to see done, contact Nora Varela, our Posada
Co-Chair, at : nvarela@rice.edu .

The Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs is pleased to
announce that the 2006 PPIA Junior Summer Institute will be held at Princeton
University from June 15 through August 4, 2006. The goal of the PPIA Junior
Summer Institute is to prepare students for graduate study and careers in
public policy and international affairs. The summer institute provides a
rigorous training in policy analysis and serves as a springboard to exciting
careers in public service.
The brochure and application are available through our website at www.wws.princeton.edu/jsi
. We hope that you will recommend our program to
eligible college juniors.
Similar summer programs are offered at Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Maryland
and Michigan with some differences in eligibility.
The application deadline is November 1, 2005 and the admission process will
be completed by mid-December. We use an early application deadline to avoid
the conflict with our graduate school admission process and enable
participants to have better lead-time to plan for the PPIA Junior Summer
Institute.

Interested in getting involved with Latino Students and inspiring them to attend college?Usually, I get a lot of e-mails and requests from various people asking for HACER to set up tours of Rice as well as other activities.
Some people are also very interested in having Rice students speak at their schools. Because of my schedule, I barely have time to help them out as much as I could. If you are interested in being the liaison between HACER and these high school administrators, please let me know. I already have information regarding this, and your main duty would be to just get people together.E-mail vmc@rice.edu if interested.
