Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering

Engineering Breadth and Focus Areas

All students pursuing the B.S.Ch.E. degree must take MECH 211. In addition, they must use 12-17 elective credits to satisfy either the engineering breadth or the focus area requirement.

A. Engineering Breadth Option (12 credits)

  • Any three of the following: CEVE 300; ELEC 243; MSCI 301 or 593 or 594; CEVE 434 or 411; BIOE 420 or 460.
  • One approved basic science course. Examples: BIOS 201 or 202; CEVE 201; ESCI 101; PHYS 201 or 202; whichever of CHEM 212, 311 or 312 not already taken.
  • Biotechnology Requirement: one of the optional Basic Science or Other Engineering courses in the area of Biology or Bioengineering (e.g. BIOS 201, BIOE 420, BIOE 460).
  • NOTE: CHBE 500 (Undergraduate Research, 3 or more credits) may be substituted for any of the above four elective courses.

Electives can also be used to create a focus (or concentration) area in one of the following four disciplines: bioengineering, computational engineering, environmental engineering and materials. Specific requirements for each focus area are listed below.

B. Environmental Science & Engineering (15 credits):

  • CEVE 201 or BIOS 201
  • CEVE 203, 434
  • Any two of the following: CEVE 401, CEVE 411, CEVE 518, CEVE 533 ,
    CEVE 534, CEVE 536 or CEVE 550.

C. Bioengineering (17 credits):

  • BIOS 201
  • Either BIOS 202 or BIOS 301.
  • BIOS 211 [Lab] or two lab modules from the cluster BIOS 311-315.
  • Three BIOE courses as approved by the undergraduate advisor.
  • CHEM 212 is strongly recommended as one of the 3 CHEM electives.

D. Materials Science & Engineering (16 credits):

  • MSCI 301, MSCI 303 [Lab]
  • MSCI 402, MSCI 406
  • Either MSCI 593 or MSCI 594 or MSCI 597
  • Either MSCI 415 or MSCI 523.

E. Computational Engineering (15 credits):

  • Math choice must be CAAM 336.
  • CAAM 335, 353, 420.
  • Two additional courses approved by the undergraduate advisor.
