Overview

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering offers programs of
graduate study leading to both the Master of Science (MS) and
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, with the primary emphasis
on the latter. A professional master's degree (MChE), involving
only course work, is also offered.
At Rice, the PhD is primarily a research degree. Graduate education
is aimed at developing each student's ability to conduct independent
creative scientific research. Our graduate curriculum provides a
sound understanding of engineering fundamentals so that our students
are versatile, a mastery of engineering tools so that our students
are productive, and clear goals of professional development so that
our students are successful.
Our graduate program is large enough to offer research topics
in several important areas of chemical engineering and related fields,
but small enough to retain an atmosphere where student and faculty
can have extensive personal contact. In addition, interdisciplinary
research projects provide ample opportunities for students to interact
with researchers from other disciplines, especially through the
interdisciplinary institutes.
During the period 1995-2004, our department awarded 80 PhD degrees
and 21 MS degrees, an average of 10 graduate research degrees
per year. It also awarded 10 professional master's (MChE) degrees
in the same period. In the fall of 2004, 65 students were enrolled
in our graduate programs (63 PhD, 1 MS and 1 MChE).
Rice University seeks to attract to its faculty, staff and
student body qualified persons of diverse backgrounds. In accordance
with this policy, Rice does not discriminate in admissions,
educational programs, or employment against any individual
on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation,
national or ethnic origin, age, disability or veteran status.
University policy also includes affirmative action in seeking
to recruit, hire and advance women, minority group members,
individuals with disabilities, Vietnam era veterans and special
disabled veterans.
