Week Three – "Laboratory Math"The only place where success comes
before work is in the dictionary. Monday presentationThe talk this week will introduce Calibrated Peer Review (CPR), the system that we will use to help you learn to write results sections of research papers. This week you will submit a results section for the first laboratory study, in addition to your materials and methods section. Through CPR you will learn to evaluate s results section, score three papers submitted by your peers, and then score your own paper. Background reading for the CPR work will be made available some time today. On your own – before your laboratory session
Pre-laboratory orientation
Laboratory work this weekYou will prepare biuret color reagent from the formula presented in the "laboratory math" writeup. You will prepare a set of protein assay standards, add color reagent, calibrate a spectrophotometer, and use the instrument to read absorbances. You will prepare two unknowns for assay and read their absorbances. You will prepare a protein standard curve in your notebook and use it along with additional information to obtain concentrations for you unknowns and fraction yields. Finally, we will give you some dilutions to perform in lab if there is time, or to plan as a homework exercise if there is not enough time. Follow-up work
