Requirements for the Honors Program
The Honors Program is intended to acknowledge outstanding students, and to provide them with advanced training in the planning and execution of sustained, independent research. As a rule, students should petition the undergraduate advisor to be admitted to the Program sometime during the latter half of their junior year. Admission is at the discretion of the department's faculty. The only formal prerequisite to admittance is a Grade Point Average in the major of at least 3.5. Once admitted to the Program, each student must complete a thesis, on a topic of his or her choosing, under the direction of one of the members of the department's faculty. Topics should be set by the end of the first month of the senior year. Theses are due at the end of the last semester of the senior year.
A statement of guidelines and deadlines for the thesis is available in the department office (Sewall 572) or from the undergraduate advisors. Students inquiring about the major in anthropology should see either Professor Susan McIntosh (Sewall 576; ext. 3380) or Professor Amy Ninetto (Sewall 566; ext. 3117). Professor McIntosh is also the advisor for majors focusing on biological or biomedical anthropology or archaeology. Professor Ninetto is the advisor for majors focusing on social-cultural anthropology. See the advisors for authorization of the issuance of registration and add-drop pins and for all other matters directly concerning the major.
Professor Eugenia Georges (Sewall 574; ext. 3390) is the undergraduate transfer credit advisor. All students seeking credit in anthropology for courses taken elsewhere should see Professor Georges for approval.
